At lower left, the Hessian column attacked the main American force, dug in along the the east side of the Brandywine River . Meanwhile by mid-afternoon, the main British force had completed its long, hot flanking march and was in position in he upper left near the Birmingham Meeting House. Hurriedly, American units under General John Sullivan moved into position, but despite their brave resistance the British had the advantage and the momentum. The American Army was saved from annhilation by an orderly withdrawal to the east as evening fell.
