Inscription on the back of the General Chart shown in the last exhibit item reads: “Mr. Bacon for first impressions of Capt. Cook's Voyage from Mr. Webber with his complements”
John Webber was the artist who accompanied Captain Cook on his 3rd and final voyage. His drawings and paintings of scenes and people encountered during the voyage were later made into engravings, which served as the illustrations included in the official British Admiralty authorized publication of Captain Cook's journal. John Webber was in charge of selecting and overseeing the engravers.
John Bacon (1740-1799) was a British sculptor who apparently assisted in critiquing the art and text of the journal publication. This is the actual map that was given to Bacon by Webber to thank him for his assistance.
